Create A Website In 10 Easy Steps
Why Do I Need A Website?
If you want to start your own small business, you’re going to need to find clients. By creating a website, potential clients will be able to find you easier.
A website should have all information that you want your clients to see such as, products, services, pricing, and all about your or your business.
It is also a great way to offer specials, discounts, and freebies. Have your customers write testimonials of the work you have done for them. Show off how amazing your company is and why they should choose you to work with.
Choose & Register Your Websites Domain Name
Choosing the right domain name is one of the most important choices for your business. It defines who you are and what you’re all about. Try to choose a name that is original and very clear about what you do.
Check to see if your address is available in this Bluehost domain availability box above. Another important decision to make is if you want it to end in .com .org .ca etc…
The most popular and easiest to find for people is .com. If it available for the name you have chosen I would highly recommend choosing it.

Create Your WordPress Site
Ok, so you have your name and your host, now you need your website. WordPress is by far the easiest and the best platform for creating a stunning website.
- Log in to your host account
- Go to your C Panel
- Look for the WordPress symbol
- Choose the domain where you want to install it
- Click “INSTALL NOW”
Choosing A Theme/Template
You have the WP platform installed. You will want the perfect theme to match your company. It already comes with a theme installed, but you don’t have to use that one. You want your site to be unique and to reflect who you are and what you do.
You are going to get to know your dashboard very well. It will become your new best friend.
There are thousands of free themes to choose from. You will need to go to your dashboard
- Click appearance
- Click themes
Now go through the themes and find the ones you like. If you decided to go with Media Temple you will be able to play around with the themes in your staging. If you went with another host, make sure your site is not live yet and then you can play around with them there as well.
You can search for specific keywords, or use the filter to find the theme styles you are looking for to suit your business needs. Once you have found the right theme then all you need to do is click
NOTE: You can change the theme whenever you like, it won’t delete your posts or any information. However, it may have to be reconfigured to suit the new theme style.
Outline Website Content
So now you have your theme, you need to create some pages to get you started
- Products and Services
- About Me
From the Dashboard Click:
- Add New
- Create the title
- Save as draft
Using the same steps as above, create the rest of the pages ( you can fill in the information on each page later).
After you have created your pages, go back:
Now you are going to create your menu structure. This will create your navigation bar. Find the page you created and add it to the list by clicking the checkbox and then “ADD TO MENU”. You can move them around and put them in the order you want them.
You are going to be adding posts to your blog section. Creating posts and adding information frequently is how you will get SEO and have people find you.
From the Dashboard, Click
You are going to add “Blog” in the name box. Then in the parent category drop down, pick “Blog” and now “add new category” to save it.
To Create Your Post
Let’s go create your post. Go back to Dashboard
- Add new
Over on the sidebar, you will see
Categories > check off BLOG and now “SAVE DRAFT. Now go ahead and create your p9st. I periodically click “save draft” in case the power goes out, I accidentally hit a wrong button and delete my hours of hard work (which I have done many times ). Clicking the save as draft keeps your work saved from the last time you clicked it.
Plugins are extensions that are built to expand WordPress capabilities, adding features and functions that don’t automatically come built in.
From your Dashboard
- Add New
There are thousands of plugins to choose from. Just click INSTALL then ACTIVATE. Here is a list of plugins that I think are essentials to every website.
Contact Form 7
Activate this plugin and add it to your ABOUT ME page. This way potential clients can contact you.
Yoast SEO or All In One SEO
Both of these plugins do the same thing. You pretty much just pick the one you like the best. These make your site SEO friendly. You will be able to create and edit tags, meta descriptions and add keywords.
Connect this to your Google account to track your visitors and traffic.
Mailerlite or Mailchimp
These are email marketing plugins that are directed to small business. These are free and very easy to use. With Mailerlite you can have up to 1000 subscribers for free, you can create pop-ups, gain subscribers, send out emails and newsletters.
WooCommerce / WooCommerce Square
If you plan to sell products or services the WooCommerce plugins are a must have. These are secure plugins designed specifically for receiving payment.
WCS Integration helps you migrate and synchronize your products and categories between Square and Woo Commerce. Square is a free Point of Sale software which facilitates the process of selling products. They will also send you a free POS card reader to attach to your phone so you can receive payments anywhere.
This creates beautiful call to action buttons ( as you see above ) quickly and easily and for free.
Link Checker or Broken Link Checker
This plugin will check each link to see if it works. If there are any broken links, it will tell you what they are so you can fix them. You don’t want potential clicking on a link they found and get an ERROR message.
Insert Headers & Footers
I love this plugin. I am not very good at coding. This plugin lets you insert codes like Google Analytics, Pinterest, Custom CSS and so much more.
Creating A Logo
Identify your brand by creating the perfect logo. Canva is free, fun and you don’t need any experience for creating one of a kind logo’s, pictures, brochure, business cards and images for social media.
Create Social Media Accounts
Creating social media sites is essential to small business owners. Sharing your posts to sites like:
there are so many more, but these seem to be the most popular. Sharing on social media can get your posts shared to potentially hundreds of thousands of people and businesses. Create the social media accounts and then link them to your website.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Get your site noticed with SEO. Add your site to Google and Bing. SEO is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results. It is also called Organic Results
Design Your Website
From your Dashboard click
This will take you to your main page as well as to your customizable tabs to finish creating your site into a work of ART.
You are ready to launch
